HILTL

After ditching my bags at the station, I met Catherine and Clare and we walked around Zurich. But really there isn’t a lot to do there sight-seeing wise. It’s a great place to party and shop (which is in itself an attraction for some). I ended up back at the Chinese gardens, open this time, and had a walk around. It’s quite small actually but nice, and they claim it has some significance.

I heard about HILTL from Christoph, Continue Reading…

Japan & Whaling, Here’s the Gist of it

Right now, Greenpeace ship ‘Esperanza’ is currently chasing ‘Nishin Maru’, one of the Japanese whaling ships, and will attempt non-violent methods to stop or interrupt their hunt. They played this message in English and Japanese to the group of ships when they found them, taken from SMH

“Your so-called scientific whaling is a hoax and has been dismissed as useless by the International Whaling Commission. Modern scientific research on whales does not require killing them,” the message said.

The ships dispersed and fled with Esperanza in pursuit.

Theres a lot of news, reports, jokes, commercials, and YouTube videos going around causing a fuss on both sides.
Here’s a quick round up of WTF is going on, some clips, and points from both sides.

Xmas at Gosport

As bright and happy as London is during winter, I went down to Tony & Gudrun’s place (My Uncle & Aunty) at Gosport (across from Portsmouth Harbour) for a more cheerful xmas. I think it’s the most of my relatives I’ve seen at the same place and time! Shows you how spread out our family is, spread out over countries such as Australia, Ireland, UK, Switzerland, Holland, Chile, China & USA, just to name a few!
Following German Tradition, we had a big dinner on xmas eve, and followed with the presents. (My cousins Peta and Noah have no arguments with this tradition as you could guess, giving them a 12hour advantage!)
Xmas Day continued with a big Lunch, and if you’re wondering what a vegan eats on Xmas day? Nut roast, baked potatoes, salad, garlic bread, biscuits, custard etc!

Unlike Oz. the UK actually puts some of their Biggest shows on Xmas day. Special episodes of Eastenders to Dr Who. But Boxing day is all about Football.

I met my cousin Marc and his family on boxing day for the first time, and they are all vegetarian! I think we actually out-numbered the non-vegetarians. Just.

We took their dog Tilly for a walk, and noted the not-so-secret Mi5 Spy Training centre (seriously, thats it, right next to the golf course, where real James Bonds are born! Maybe I should inquire about a position?) and a decommissioned fort on top of the hill.

So apparently I share my birthday with a) Toni Collete, and (quite conveniently) b) World Vegan Day!

After meeting Corey and Drew for a quick drink I joined some total strangers vegan friends for a vegan dinner! Veg Tai is a combination Chinese/Thai Vegan buffet offering some of those fake meat style dishes loaded with salt, but also some real vegan food. And its Cheap! There are about 6 of them in Soho alone, at varying degrees of standard. (Luckily the one in Angel is one of the better ones! :) Great for a late-night feed.)
Anyway that was quite nice and civilized, and turns out 3 others were in the production industry.

Next Day, After already milking face book and Timezones to get a 33hr Birthday, I kept it up and Joined Justine and some of her friends on Friday. After drinks at Waxy Oconor’s we moved to a restaurant in China Town and shared a jug of Pineapple Daiquiri that seemed to have no alcohol what-so-ever, so Juzz decided a JUG of Long Island Ice Tea with Extra Rum was a good idea!…..’course it was… A couple of the guys were even forced to make use of the wonderful “public urinals” they “install” around the center just for the weekends, [pictures withheld!!] you know what I mean if you’ve seen them.

I got home around 3am and was fumbling to open the door when my flatmate opened it for me. This was all very confusing because it wasn’t our house! In the dark and returning late for the first time to this place, I had gone to the adjoined Town House, which has an identical entrance next to ours and had lights on inside. My flat mate was hanging out there, and I had met them last week so i stayed for a bit before going back home next door.

Brown Rice Cafe Burger20cent Coin

Brown Rice Cafe is a nice little Vegan resturant just off fashionable Omotesando. The presentation was nice, but unfortunately the 20cent coin next to the burger is reference for size! Honestly, I almost laughed when they brought out my Burger. I thought “Should I eat this in 1 bite or 2?”. And you should have seen the size of the cake Bao Qin ordered. The taste was nothing special and the price was typical Harajuku. SO in other words, while this cafe is nice and relaxing, I wouldnt recommend going there if you’re hungry or short on cash!!

Govindas 1

Almost every country I’ve been too I noticed a vegetarian restaurant called “Govinda’s”, which is apparantly another name for the Indian God, Krishna, and means ‘one who looks after cows’. Who knew?

So of course I also found one here in Tokyo! Slightly difficult to get to, Govinda’s in Nakano offers good, cheap, Vegetarian food, with Vegan options! This includes Vegan deserts like Cheesecake!! Unfortunately they had sold out.

I went with Bao Qin, Mayuko, Aiko and Masayuki and the 5 of us took up half the place. The chef’s were Japanese and spoke a little english, and understood various requirements of vegetarians! A rarity in Japan.
