Australia’s First Soccer World Cup in 36years, and I happened to be in Germany for it This is a video from my time there, much of it spent watching the games and drinking Weisbeer with Tim and Gabby! Unfortunately the Ref’s were constantly against us as we had some of the worst decisions and lop-sided calls made in the entire competition, notably ital’ys DIVE obtaining a free kick to steal the match, and the biggest foul difference ever against brazil. Still, Australia made the 2nd round and proved many doubters wrong. GO AUSTRALIA!

With the cup and LP gone, its the first time in a while we actually had to think of what to do! So we got back on the tourist path.
Visiting the Topography of terror, Check-point Charlie museum with some amaizing stories of escape to the West, various other museums, one with a special on the history of the World Cup (check out the photo of the last Australian qualifying team!!) and a bar with a pool by the river.
We also took the train to Potsdam, viewing the massive park containing SAN SOUCI Palace, but Joe wasn’t home. And a odd little movie-themed park with some funny little rides. Here I also say goodbye to gabby for a few weeks!
Finally Dom, whats this Sequin covered night club here??

Starting as a protest (basically some guys following a car with a couple of subs), Love Parade grew to be the world’s largest outdoor dance festival.
With the authorities refusing to class it as a protest anymore, Love Parade organizers could not afford the clean up bill, as previously it was paid by the Government (condition of protest) and so it was canceled for 2 years. Continue Reading…

The Generator, Berlin (also in London), is a BIG Hostel. It takes over 300 people, and the biggest problem with this is it means they cater to tour groups, and worse, school groups. Way too many youngsters there treating the place like crap and lowering the quality for all. Apart from that, and its location being a little out of the way (although right next to the station) its not that a bad Hostel. The rooms were big enough, big lockers, nice bar downstairs (be warned of karaoke night!) FREE Breakfast, and the Free Walking Tour (see below) also starts here. But the internet was expensive and crap, with half the keyboards or mice not working (check local internet shops). Saw 2 other hostels in Berlin and have their ups and downs, beware of security if you stay in central Berlin.
After seeing off Shana and the gang Gabby and I headed back to Berlin before Love Parade.
Post WC Berlin was quite different, and gave us time for some Sight Seeing. We took the FREE New Berlin Walking tour, similar to the one in Munich, and it was just as good. Loads of Berlin history jammed into 3hours as we saw the key sights of Berlin with stories to boot!
The Berlin wall itself is a lot smaller and thinner than I expected, but the combination of 2 walls surrounding no-mans land and Soldiers stationed along the whole wall is what made it so strong. You really feel a bit heavy when you try to soak in everything from Berlin’s past in just a couple of days.
We aslo walked up the top of the Reichstag (glass dome looking thing).
I joined up with Shana and her crew from Sydney for the finals in Berlin! The 3rd place play off were essentially the grand final for the Germans. They absolutely crowded the FAN MILE on Straße des 17. Juni, and after the win partied well into the night. The final itself was a mixture of all the teams fans rejoining to party, and well as much as I hated Italy at the time, better they win than France hey
We also did some sight seeing, including these Peace Bears, decorated by every country n the UN. (Australia’s pathetic entry was done by Ken Done and and looked like the work of a 2 year old with some fingerpaint).
And with that, The World cup is Finished! Here comes 2010!
We all know thats the only way to describe Australia’s exit from the World cup, as World Champs, of diving, drama, crying, and general pussies Italy, took a dive with 30″ to spare, giving Totti a free chance to take the game after 90″ came up with 0-0. Australia deserved so much better. If to lose, then to a team that deserved it by playing better and scoring within game play, not by diving. Thats it. No more on that topic.
So we’re having breakfast a couple days ago, covered in green and gold, and 2 Channel 7 guys started asking us about a live cross to the 6pm news! We told them the only way they would get all the Aussies together at 10am on the day we play Australia, is BEER. FREE BEER. So they booked the pub Continue Reading…
It all started with Gabby coming into Munich. Then joined by my mate Timmy from TAFE, we headed out to see Australia’s first world cup match in 32 years. Never won a match, or even scored a goal. Continue Reading…
