Hiking a mountain to see the first sunrise of the year! Sounded like a good idea at the time.
Well it was at one point. Then, after wandering around all day on new years eve, I was hit by what I can only guess was maybe a combination of some dodgy food, water, and the heat. I started feeling pretty ill in the afternoon, and by 6pm I was throwing up and couldn’t keep so much as a glass of water down. (No, alcohol was NOT involved!). We weren’t planning a big New Year’s Eve, in preparation for the hike, but we would have liked to at least wander the streets and see what was going on. Nope.
By the time our driver picked us up at 2am, I still hadn’t slept or managed to keep any food or liquids down. But I was starting to feel a bit better, and it was too late to cancel now. So we drove out to the base of Mount Batur (saw plenty of people still partying in the streets on the way), and began what should have been a 60-90 min hike to the top, just in time to catch the sun rise from the peak. But with no sleep, food, or water, I wasn’t exactly setting a record pace. I was running on an empty tank.
But we pushed on, and with the help of our guide from Bali Trekking Tour, we made it to the top, just after sun rise. Luckily we were close enough that we could still catch it en route.
It was an awesome view at the top, and we hung around for about an hour or so before heading back down, which was only slightly easier because of the loose dirt ground, steep angle and being shattered from the way up. At least I could drink water now! I would do it again for sure, but hopefully not straight after a round of food poisoning.
