My Son (Vietnam)
No, I haven’t discovered I have an illegitimate child somewhere around the world, My Son is actually a group of Hindu Temples built by the kings of Champa around 4th-14th Century AD.
There are numerous trips leaving from Hoi An as its only an hour or so away, I went with English lads Scot and Dave who I met at the Hotel and the Aussie guys I played poker with back in Hanoi. There’s a bridge at the entrance and once you walk over, the actual site is 1K or so away, so they shuttle you via a couple of original USA millitary Jeeps from the war! Quite cool.
We walked around and looked at the temples, some of which are almost rubble, due to both the war and simply falling apart over the years. There are even craters around you can spot from bombs dropped by the USA, long since overgrown with grass and weeds.
These plants are apparently called ‘Makahiya’ or “Shy Plants”, because they are very sensative when you run your finger over the leaves they close over, also at night.
The tours give you the option to take a boat back instead of the bus. Of course it costs a few bucks extra but its more interesting than the same ol ride back, you get lunch on the boat, and you stop at a village that makes the usual stuffs. Note the markings on the wall which are FLOOD LINES! They also make boats here, with a very fast turn around and they sell them for a fraction of the cost you’d pay in the western world.
