On the Aare: Beer Boat

Probably one of the greatest ideas Christoph has ever had, and ever will have, was to take a boat from Thun to Bern on the Aare river.

His brother and some mates who had done it before joined us and in total there were about 12 of us and 5 or so boats. Well I guess you could call ours a boat. Bought for 50CHF from Inter Discount, the packaging promised room for 4, the boat itself said 2, and we thought 1. So we weren’t so confident of staying afloat the entire trip. Someone else had the same boat, and we were taking best who would sink first.

But once in the water, with our beer boat in tow, we were solid. Cruising down Aare with clear blue sky, the banks lined with trees and mountains in the background… its a pretty damn good reason to come to Switzerland. We floated for a couple of hours before stopping ashore for lunch, fire roasted veggies for me, and a few bevvies. Then back in the boat to continue on to Bern, and watch the locals swimming in the river (bit too cold for my liking!) as they jump in off bridges and entry points and float with the current as we do, before taking one of the various exits to walk back up and repeat the cycle!

The only thing to try and bring this day down a notch was me being an idiot and forgetting to put sunscreen on my legs! Sitting in the boat with my what as(s) legs hanging over the side for 5 hours didn’t do them too good.

After about 6 hours we had floated all the way from Thun to Bern and took the exit before hitting the hydro plant where we definitely would have got into some trouble. We then drove on to Interlaken and watched the final of the Euro Cup with Spain taking out Germany 1-0.
